Bible Readings
The Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 25 & 26, 2023

“A Living Hope”
1 Peter 1:6-9

FIRST READING Ecclesiastes 9:1-4 (NIV ’84)
1 So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God's hands, but no man knows whether love or hate awaits him.  2 All share a common destiny-- the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good man, so with the sinner; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.  3 This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of men, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead.  4 Anyone who is among the living has hope--even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

SECOND READING  1 Peter 1:6-9 (NIV ‘84) (Sermon Text)
6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  7 These have come so that your faith-- of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-- may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.  8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9  for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

THE HOLY GOSPEL  John 11:38-44 (NIV “84)
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.  39 "Take away the stone," he said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days."  40 Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"  41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.  42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."  43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"  44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."

The Stewardship Team, comprised of Mark Sulzer, Cindy Schmiegelt, Steve Van Swol, Pastor Dan and me, has been working on a program to elevate the role of Stewardship in our congregation.  The outcome of this effort is the launching of the St. John’s Stewardship Journey!

This video offers a brief introduction of the Stewardship Journey and its purpose.  As you will see, the Stewardship Journey does not have a specific start or finish and anyone can join at any time.  But most importantly, it is a journey we can all join regardless of where we are in our relationship with Christ.  Stewardship offers a path to enhancing our understanding and appreciation for the spiritual benefits of joyously giving of all of life and life’s resources and to living a Christ centered life.

The Stewardship Team looks forward to continuing our efforts and providing more visibility to the many different paths all of us can take to join the St. John’s Stewardship Journey.  Click below to watch video.

Yours in Christ,

Sean Tegart
