Fasting has its origin in the Old Testament and has been practiced by Christians in the centuries since.
Why did people in the Bible fast? In Leviticus 16:29 fasting is synonymous with “afflicting one’s soul.” Fasting is something the soul (thoughts, feelings) actually participates in.

How to begin your fast:
- Consult your physician if you have a chronic ailment and take prescription medication.
- If your health allows, we recommend starting with a minimum of 6 hours during the day on Fridays in lent (or any day that works better for you).
- Set your spiritual goal: e.g. draw closer to God in prayer, yield flesh to God, practice self-denial, seek God’s direction for a decision.
- Decide how long you will fast—2 meals? 24 hours? Beginners should start slowly.
While you fast:
- Take time for prayer during times you would normally eat.
- Continue to drink plenty of water.
- Continue to take medication as directed even if it needs to be with food.
- A cup of black coffee is acceptable.
- For longer fasts, juices may be consumed.
- Rest as your schedule permits.
- Limit your activity.
- Expect difficulty including spiritual opposition, especially if the practice is new to you.
- Incorporate praise and worship music.
